Q&A
How has INSPIRE and/or the School of Education helped you grow as a future teacher?
Being a part of INSPIRE has opened up my eyes to different world views as to what it means to be an educator. Through seminars, fireside chats, and cultural excursions I feel that I have gained new perspectives on what education is which will benefit me greatly when I have a classroom of my own.
What has been your favorite experience as a member of the INSPIRE LLC so far?
My favorite experience in INSPIRE has been the community and friends I have gained. Going into my freshman year I was nervous about making new friends and finding my place on campus, but INSPIRE made it so that I had a community right away. I feel that if I were put in a regular dorm I would not have had as great of a first-year experience.
What influenced your decision to become a Peer Mentor?
The Peer Mentors I had as a freshman were such great mentors and leaders to me. They helped me around campus, with classes, and provided insight into education and community through fireside chats and cultural excursions. I wanted to offer the same great experiences I had to future freshman and make their first-year experience as memorable as I had.
Joining INSPIRE was one of the best decisions I could make going into college. I have gained so much from being in the LLC such as friendships, community, and knowledge about my field of study.
What are some of the responsibilities you have as a Peer Mentor?
As a Peer Mentor, I'm responsible for leading fireside chats, where we discuss a topic relating to education, and cultural excursions, where we go out around campus or into the community and learn more about different cultures. We also plan out a bunch of different events for the floor during Welcome Week! Additionally, I make myself available to support people on the floor, whether that be talking about academics or anything else!
Do you have any advice for anyone who might be thinking about applying to INSPIRE?
INSPIRE is an amazing way to meet new people and learn more about different topics related to education, so if that sounds like something you're interested in, I recommend applying!
What would you say to someone considering joining INSPIRE?
If you are looking for a community of people who are passionate about education but are also very supportive, INSPIRE is the place for you! Additionally, if you are able to, taking a tour of the floor is a great idea!
