Q&A
How has INSPIRE and/or the School of Education helped you grow as a future teacher?
INSPIRE connects you to teachers and gets you thinking about your priorities as a future educator early in your college career.
What has been your favorite experience as a member of the INSPIRE LLC so far?
My favorite part of being an INSPIRE member for these past two years has been all of the people I’ve been able to meet. Not only have I been able to meet so many new people through living in the INSPIRE dorm, but also I have gained professional advice and connections through experiences set up through INSPIRE. I have met incredible in-service teachers and administrators and been able to learn so much from them, which is something I would not have been able to experience without having joined INSPIRE.
What influenced your decision to become a Peer Mentor?
I decided to become a peer mentor because I wanted to be a part of the community that helped me so much my freshman year. My peer mentors helped me adjust and find my place at IU during my first year, and I wanted to help incoming students in that same way.
INSPIRE was the most important factor in getting me adjusted to college life. I love the community that comes with joining this LLC and I have learned so much about myself as an educator.
What are some of the responsibilities you have as a Peer Mentor?
As a peer mentor my main responsibility is helping the first year INSPIRE students. We also assist with INSPIRE programming by leading cultural excursions and fireside chats.
Do you have any advice for anyone who might be thinking about applying to INSPIRE?
Do it! INSPIRE was the most important factor in getting me adjusted to college life. I love the community that comes with joining this LLC and I have learned so much about myself as an educator. I would say to take a tour of the floor and of IU to really decide if this is the place for you.
What would you say to someone considering joining INSPIRE?
Join—If you are interested in a dorm that is a tight-knit community, then INSPIRE is for you! INSPIRE helps you find your people in college, as well as helps you develop what is important to you in terms of education.
