Q&A with Olivia
How has INSPIRE or the School of Education helped you grow as a future teacher?
INSPIRE and the School of Education have helped me grow as a future educator because they have allowed me to develop my communication skills among peers, foster a sense of passion for education, and have allowed me a space to network. All of my wonderful experiences in both programs have shown me that I am on the right path and that teaching is something that I am going to love.
What has been your favorite experience as a member of the INSPIRE LLC so far?
My favorite experience as a member of the INSPIRE LLC has been getting to meet and hang out with some of my best friends. Whether we are exploring Chicago, finding our way through a corn maze at the pumpkin patch, sledding down the hill outside of the School of Education during the first big snow, playing board games in the lounges at all hours of the night, or simply sitting in Seminar together, there is always fun to be had.
What influenced your decision to become a Peer Mentor?
I became a Peer Mentor because of the wonderful community and culture of care that exists on the INSPIRE floor. I wanted to help foster a similar environment for the incoming students and help to ensure that everyone felt like INSPIRE was a safe space. I had a wonderful experience last year and hope to provide the same experience for the new residents.
I went into my first semester of college absolutely terrified that I would not make friends or find a community that I resonated with. INSPIRE proved to be just that quite quickly. I met my best friend, got to hang out with a wonderful community, and made some amazing memories during my freshman year. I am so glad that I went with INSPIRE, and I really think that you will be too.
What are some responsibilities you have as a Peer Mentor?
A few of the responsibilities I have as a Peer Mentor include planning and facilitating Fireside Chats and Cultural Excursions, creating a schedule of events for Welcome Week, answering any questions about IU and the School of Education, and supporting students in their academic, social, and emotional endeavors.
Do you have any advice for anyone who might be thinking about applying to INSPIRE?
If INSPIRE is something you are considering, then I'd say go for it! What would you say to someone considering joining INSPIRE?
Do it! You might just meet your best friend, find a wonderfully supportive community, and have some amazing adventures- all while learning how to be the best educator you can be along the way.
