Q&A with Ellie
How has INSPIRE or the School of Education helped you grow as a future teacher?
While I don't plan on being a teacher in the traditional sense, INSPIRE and the School of Education have helped me grow into the arts education advocate I am today. Both of these communities have shown me the power my voice holds and how to stand up for what I believe in. INSPIRE specifically has not only taught me how to be a strong and supportive community member, but also how to be a better friend.
What has been your favorite experience as a member of the INSPIRE LLC so far?
One of my favorite INSPIRE events from last year was our weeklong Halloween celebration that we called Halloweek! As a member of the INSPIRE Council, my fellow council members and I got to plan every aspect of the week; from the door decorating contest, to the Halloween party, to the annual pumpkin patch visit. The best part was getting to experience all of it with some of the best people I have ever met!
What influenced your decision to become a Peer Mentor?
I became a Peer Mentor because I wanted to build a community that was inclusive and supportive. With a campus so big, it can be hard to find where you belong! My transition from high school to college was an extremely daunting one but having a place that felt like home is what made it so easy. I hope to continue that feeling this year!
Joining INSPIRE was one of best decisions I've ever made! If you want a place where you can be 100% authentically yourself, then I highly recommend joining. Everyone belongs here, especially you!
What are some responsibilities you have as a Peer Mentor?
As a Peer Mentor, it is my responsibility to foster a safe, welcoming environment on the INSPIRE floor. We guide students through the highs and lows of college. As I like to put it, we are personal cheerleaders! Peer Mentors are also tasked with planning Welcome Week activities, as well as enriching academic events like Fireside Chats and Cultural Excursions.
Do you have any advice for anyone who might be thinking about applying to INSPIRE?
Joining INSPIRE was one of best decisions I've ever made! The best advice I could give is to dive headfirst into every situation. Lots of opportunities come your way in college, and living in INSPIRE is not one to pass up!
What would you say to someone considering joining INSPIRE?
If you want a place where you can be 100% authentically yourself, then I highly recommend joining. Everyone belongs here, especially you!
