Q&A with Katie
How has INSPIRE or the School of Education helped you grow as a future teacher?
Before joining Inspire, I was much more anxious about meeting new people. Everyone on the floor was so friendly, and they really helped me come out of my shell. I also feel that living in a community of people that are so different yet so close together really prepared me to interact with students from many different backgrounds.
What has been your favorite experience as a member of the INSPIRE LLC so far?
I have really enjoyed the friendships that I've made. We have so many fun planned activities that helped me grow closer to people, but some of my favorite memories have been the unplanned moments. From going on late-night fast food drives, to having deep talks in the lounges, to group walks around campus, I have so many fond memories of spontaneous adventures. As a freshman in 2020, there weren't a ton of campus activities. Having the INSPIRE community turned what could have been a lonely, boring year into a great experience for me.

What influenced your decision to become a Peer Mentor?
My freshman year had many great parts, but it was also a really challenging time for me. My peer mentors helped me navigate everything and were so integral in making my year better. I wanted to continue the favor and be there for future freshmen in similar situations.
What are some responsibilities you have as a Peer Mentor?
The first few weeks of class, some of our biggest jobs are leading activities and helping figure out campus and classes. As the year progresses, along with leading certain activities, we try to facilitate community building and inclusivity in our community.
Do you have any advice for anyone who might be thinking about applying to INSPIRE?
You won't regret joining! If you're unsure, I'd suggest going ahead and applying to keep your options open!
What would you say to someone considering joining INSPIRE?
I absolutely recommend joining the community! It's such a good way to make friends, especially if you're worried about meeting people.
