Q&A with Katie
How has INSPIRE or the School of Education helped you grow as a future teacher?
INSPIRE has been so influential in my decision to teach. I came into my first year of college feeling uncertain and nervous about my choice to pursue a degree in education, but INSPIRE totally changed that feeling! There were so many events, guest speakers, and opportunities to hear from real teachers that I was constantly reminded of how important teachers are and what they can do to change the world. Even just being surrounded by other students with similar passions and motivations to help others was so encouraging.
What has been your favorite experience as a member of the INSPIRE LLC so far?
I really enjoyed our focus on community and cultural activities. Though I can’t pick just one, some of my favorites were our trip to the Islamic Cultural Center, Monroe County Public Library, Harmony Elementary School, and IU’s International Mother Langauge’s Day Celebration.
What influenced your decision to become a Peer Leader?
I love INSPIRE and I love the community, and I wanted to play a part in developing that community for the freshmen. Transitioning to college can be a big transition, and I know having someone who had experienced it all before made a big difference in my freshman experience.
INSPIRE has made a big difference in my college life. If you are worried that education is not the right major for you, or if you are worried about making friends, or even if you just want a fun place to live, INSPIRE is the right choice!
What are some of the responsibilities you have as a Peer Leader?
As a Peer Leader, I work with a team of other Peer Leaders to plan Cultural Excursions and Fireside Chats (meetings where we explore topics in education and/or bring in guest speakers). We are also builders and facilitators of the community on our floor. During the first few weeks of school, we plan icebreakers, games, and events to help the freshmen get to know each other. Throughout the rest of the year, we offer advice on classes, mentor freshmen as needed, and generally work to create a safe space on the floor where everyone feels welcomed and included.
Do you have any advice for anyone who might be thinking about applying to INSPIRE?
Do it! INSPIRE is a great community, and you will love it here!
What would you say to someone considering joining INSPIRE?
INSPIRE has made a big difference in my college life. If you are worried that education is not the right major for you, or if you are worried about making friends, or even if you just want a fun place to live, INSPIRE is the right choice!
