Q&A with Sidney
How has INSPIRE or the School of Education helped you grow as a future teacher?
Both INSPIRE, and the School of Education constantly challenge my ideas, thoughts, and assumptions for the better. I have become a more analytical and aware teacher, but also person overall working with those in the School of Education.
What has been your favorite experience as a member of the INSPIRE so far?
My favorite experience on the INSPIRE floor has been learning so many different things about many different topics from speakers, my peers, and the INSPIRE staff. Overall the INSPIRE community is unbelievably conducive for learning and truly engaging with others.
What influenced your decision to become a Peer Leader?
I wanted to become a Peer Leader because I wanted to have a beneficial impact on INSPIRE itself. The idea of being able to advise and support future teachers through the experience that I had last year was something that I knew could have a positive impact on those around me and myself as well.
INSPIRE is a tight-knit community that we like to consider family. The people you meet will change your life for the better.
What are some of the responsibilities you have as a Peer Leader?
As a Peer Leader I am in charge of helping create an environment that is inclusive for all, to help freshmen through their first-year experience, and overall be a supportive role model in their life. We are in charge of providing cultural excursion in the Bloomington community as well as creating discussions that challenge and inform their thinking.
Do you have any advice for anyone who might be thinking about applying to INSPIRE?
If you are even considering applying for INSPIRE, definitely do it. Not only does INSPIRE make the transition from your home town to the IU campus easier, but it also provides multiple resources and experiences for future educators. INSPIRE is a tight-knit community that we like to consider family. The people you meet will change your life for the better.
What would you say to someone considering joining INSPIRE?
Education is an active process that never ends. Don't be a passive learner.
